Life changes
Something happens. Something unexpected. Suddenly you find yourself with a diagnosis, a personal loss, an injury or illness, a trauma, a job loss. Nothing is the same. All your roadmaps are instantly obsolete. What are you going to do? What can you do? How will you find your way forward?
It happened to me. In an instant. A traumatic brain injury in 1990 ended life as I knew it. Everything stopped. From one moment to the next my life changed completely. I spent the next eight years learning how to heal, learning how to live a new life. I wrote about it. I am still learning.

Life doesn't change
The same old things seem to happen over and over. You want to do things differently but you find yourself in the same situation, different day, same outcome. All your roadmaps are leading to the same unwanted or unfulfilling destinations. What are you going to do? What can you do? How will you find your way forward?

It happened to me. I came out of the brain injury with PTSD, major depression and alcohol addiction. Each day was a repeat of the day before. I waited. Hoping things would change by themselves. They didn't. Other people saw my stuckness. They recommended doctors, groups, practices. I said, "Thank you," and I went back to waiting.
Then one day, a friend did something simple and extraordinary. She picked up the phone on her desk and called the Osteopath I had not called and she booked me an appointment. I went to the appointment. He started to treat me. Things started to change. Then I remembered the Chinese doctor I had invited to my medical anthropology class. I started to study qigong with him. More things started to change.
Then I had a blackout. I went to see an osteopath/psychiatrist. He talked about PTSD. I didn't know what he was talking about. PTSD made no sense to me. I listened for a year. Then one day it made sense. More things started to change. Then I heard about Vipassana. My brother in law, a neurologist, said it was the strongest brain medicine he knew . I listened. I went to Vipassana training. More things started to change. ...READ MORE

Is it time for a change?
Life is too precious to spend it doing work that you do not love or work that is not respected or supported. Many people start over, sometimes numerous times. I have started over four times. First in medical anthropology. Second in Ayurvedic healing support. Third in traditional Chinese medicine practice. And now in coaching. Are you ready to chart a new course? What are you hoping to do? What would you love to be doing? Are you considering retiring? Would you like to partner in finding your way forward?

Caregiver burnout

Too many of my seriously ill patients were teachers, nurses or care givers. Caring professionals too often don't prioritize their own self-care needs.
It happened to me. I took on too much in treating my patients and became exhausted and vulnerable. I had to slow down, to reduce my workload, to be honest with myself about my own limitations. I had to learn to ask for support for myself.
People who give for a living also need to receive and often need clarity to learn how to ask for what they need and support to take action to get what they need for their own well being.

Healing support

After your diagnosis, after your treatments, after your discharge, you can find yourself left back where you started –– on your own. No more doctors. No more medical techs. No more hospital staff. The society of medical support that once surrounded you is gone. Medicine has done what it can. Your healing is now up to you. Actually it always was. But it seemed like your care was other peoples business.
It happened to me. In my twenties I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune syndrome that was afflicting my eyes, leaving me blind in the affected eye for weeks at a time. Doctors told me that the episodes in each eye would increase in frequency and I would soon be permanently blind. Medicine had no curative treatment for my condition. If I was not to go blind I would have to figure out how to heal on my own.
It happened again in 1990. Doctors had nothing for me after the brain injury. Their advice? Just be patient. Once again I was on my own to discover what helped, what didn't. And to find my own way to healing. ... READ MORE
